Capping a lengthy and contentious debate, the Ann Arbor City Council recently voted 8-1 to begin shooting deer this winter. Several members of the majority who voted for the cull described themselves as “animal-lovers.” Mayor Christopher Taylor cast the only dissenting vote, The Humane Society of Huron Valley has advocated for non-lethal methods and the board chair of HSHV was among many who spoke before the vote.Ann Arbor Deer, courtesy of HSHV and Ryan Stanton, MLive

This winter, sharp-shooters working at night in several areas of the city, will kill 100 deer in parks and nature areas. Several groups, including MiPACA, have questioned the legality of the cull, and are considering a lawsuit based on animal cruelty laws and on the state’s 450′ safety zone requirement.
